India e-Visa digital photo requirements

Official digital-photo requirements for an India e-Visa application submitted through the Government of India portal.

Requirement summary

  • Upload a JPEG image between 10 KB and 1 MB.
  • The photograph must be square, with equal height and width.
  • Show the full face from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, looking directly at the camera with eyes open and without spectacles.
  • Centre the head, use a plain light-coloured or white background and avoid shadows on the face or background.
  • The image must not have a border.

  • Crop, aspect ratio and output dimensions
  • Background colour and consistency
  • Head position, scale and visible margins
  • File type and file-size limits where applicable
  • Potential sharpness, lighting, shadow and expression issues

Common rejection risks

  • Uploading a portrait or landscape image instead of a square image
  • Using a file outside the 10 KB to 1 MB range or a format other than JPEG
  • Wearing spectacles or submitting a photo with shadows, borders or an uneven background
  • Cropping out part of the head or failing to centre the face
